Where others may see a pile of rusty metal, Rick Wittrig sees art. It all began a poorly made fire pit fell apart and caught his yard on fire.

“I could have gone out and purchased another fire pit but it would only be a matter of time before it would fall apart too,” Rick told Wilson Living Magazine.

A friend of Rick’s who used old propane tanks to make smokers for grilling meat had pieces that were left over so that gave Rick created a fire pit out of pieces that were left behind. He got a lot of positive feedback and soon began selling fire pits to friends. Rick then took a leap and ordered 20,000 pounds of steel and created Fire Pit Art.

"The organizers for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver saw my work and called to commission a Globe I was working on,” Rick said in a recent interview.

The organizers needed to get the piece within a week for the opening ceremony so the pressure was on. It took Rick 30 hours to create the magnificent Earth shaped fire pit and the Third Rock made it to the Vancouver Winter Olympics in time for the opening ceremony.
